Let’s start here: What the heck is a strata? It’s basically an egg and bread casserole-with lots of bread. You can pretty much label it is a savory bread pudding. Why do we like strata?
- Lots of bread.
- You can make ahead. And it’s ridiculously easy.
- You can add whatever ingredients you want or have on hand.
Don’t feel like using the crockpot? Make it in a nonstick dish and cook in the oven for 70 minutes at 350 degrees. Refrigerate overnight prior.
Ham & Gruyere Slow Cooked Strata

Ingredients
- 1 loaf (8-ounces) French bread, torn into 1" pieces
- 1 cup cubed ham
- 1 cup (4 oz) gruyere, shredded
- 6 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tsp garlic salt
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Cut (or tear) bread into about 1-inch size cubes and place in a sprayed slow cooker. Sprinkle ham and then cheese over the top.Combine remaining ingredients until well mixed; pour over bread mixture. At this point, you can refrigerate if desired. Cover and cook on HIGH 2½ to 3 hours or until mixture is set. Makes 6 servings.
